Chumash - Bible

Chumash study is at the heart of our fifth grade curriculum. This year we will study the book of Shemot. It is a goal that students will be proficient in reading and understanding the Hebrew text as well as able to formulate questions and higher level thinking about content covered. Chumash instruction uses pieces of Tal-Am and other curriculums. Chumash study is conducted in both Hebrew and English.

Navi -Prophits

We will study the book of Shoftim-Judges. We will use project based learning as way to delve into the content of the Navi.

Parshat Hashavua - Weekly Torah Portion

Parshat Hashavua focuses on the content of each Parsha and deeper thinking about the topics studied.

  • To watch four minute animated videos about each Parsha: G-dcast.com

Ivrit - Hebrew

We will use the Tal-Am Shani Yehudit curriculum for Hebrew language. This is a continuation of past years adding to the virtual class that students have grown with since first grade. Jewish holidays are part of the Tal Am curriculum as well. Hebrew focuses on reading fluency and comprehension, writing proficiency, oral skills, and language comprehension. Shani Yehudit is taught in Hebrew.

Hebrew Book Buddies

In addition to the Hebrew work of Tal Am, students will have the opportunity to partner with Kindergarten twice a month for Hebrew book buddies. Students will select Hebrew children’s book to read to their buddies.

Mishna

Our study of Mishna will begin with an exploration of Jewish history. We will study the historical context that led to the Mishna being written down and who the key players of the Mishna are. Our study will continue by delving into the texts of parts of Mashechet Brachot and Pirkei Avot.

Homework

Students will have weekly Hebrew and/or Chumash reading to practice at home. At times there will also be homework connected to our class projects.
