Ecocolumn Reflection

First we started with cutting the three soda bottles in halves and quarters. The week after cutting the soda bottles in halves and quarters we took those halves and quarters and made a connector, an aquarium and a terrarium. We put water in the aquarium and put soil in the terrarium. Then Daniel, Shoshana, Nina and I were in the fertilizer group and I think we did a great job. We used a p.H. scale. If you want to know what a p.H. scale is it's what you use to see how acidic something is. You don't want it to be too low or too high. I worked with Daniel and I think we did a good job.

What I learned about ecosystems is that they can be destroyed, for example, Yellowstone national park had  grey wolves. They became extinct in the national park.  Eco-columns can get effected by pollution. Pollution isn't good for animals and all living things.  A p.H. scale is when you see how polluted something is and how something isn't. You can tell if something is polluted because the p.H. is too high or too low.

An Eco-system is a place like earth. Seattle has a lot of Eco-systems, for example, Seward Park, Mount Baker and Madrona are Eco-systems. If you are wondering what an Eco-system has to have, it needs to have, water, air and grass A.K.A land. When we made the Eco-columns it helped me understand Eco-systems. Our fish and grass all died. I think the fish died because we didn't feed it and the grass died because we did not water it.

Have you ever had an Eco-column?

Science

Our aquarium has changed a lot over time. I know this because our snails started out at the bottom and just started climbing up to the top. Sometimes stuff moves. Our elodea moved out of the water. Our snails keep rotating to new spots all the time.

Our terrarium has also changed. For example, our grass grew to the top in three days. Mrs. Ambrosio had to cut our weeds but they grew to the top again. We think our cricket jumped out because we haven’t seen it in five days! So there have been some crazy things that happened to our terrarium.

Our biotic snails rely on the abiotic water to live. For example, there's oxygen in the water which helps fish breath. Abotic things are non-living. Biotic things are living.

Have you ever made a terrarium?

My Ecocolumn

My ecocolumn is very wet and damp. The ecocolumn started out very lively but now all of our animals are dead. Like our Cricket is dead and all of our Snails are dead and our fish is dead and our spider escaped. These have affected most of our Elodea and most of the Elodea is dying.

Biotic and abiotic things depend on each other because the plants cant't live without dirt. Biotic things depend on each other because the animals breath out CO2 witch the plants breath in. And the plants breath out oxygen witch the animals breath in.

Have you ever made an ecocolumn? Was it fun?
