finishing up our timelines this week.We are about a week into researching for our "Planet in Peril" Projects.

What we have been doing this week in 5th grade , In math we have been learning the customary units of math For Example, 15 ft = 5 Yards, a few of us have been working on the metric system For Example,
1 M = 100 CM.We are learning about how global warming affects the really harsh climates across the globe
not just places with very average temperatures and a very average amount of trees.everybody will be finishing their reading goals by the end of the year.

This week We have been learning about how to find the area of various shapes (Circle,Rectangle Etc)

to find the area of a triangle you take the base of the shape and you multiply it by the height and then you divide by 2 , Because bxh Is the formula for Finding the area of a quadrilateral  And it takes two triangles too make a quadrilateral. We have also been taking the MSP's.

We have all finished our Prezi's and they are on the blog.

What we have been doing this week in 5th grade?

In Math we are learning about quadrilaterals, a quadrilateral is a type of shape that has 4 sides For Example, Rhombus, Square, Rectangle,Kite,Parallelogram,Trapezoid. We are also learning about the different types of a triangle For Example,an Isosceles triangle is a triangle with 2 sides that are the same length, a Scalene triangle is a triangle that all three sides are different lengths,A Equilateral triangle all side lengths are the same.

In social studies we are wrapping up our independence project the patriots won because they had more people(12) and the loyalists only had 5.We are also continuing our research topics which are due after break.

What We have been doing this Week in 5th grade

This week in math we are starting to prepare for Math night, This year we are doing two projects instead of one.One of our projects this year is a paper airplane project that combines math and science.
Our other project we will be playing fraction games.

We have just started a social studies unit on the american revolution. We are doing a simulation called "independence" , We have divided the class into three factions Loyalist, Patriots and Neutralist. There will be a debate every week between the Loyalists and the Patriots and the Neutralists will have to join a side.

What we have been Doing this week in 5th grade

In math we have been playing games to practice adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators,and here is an example, 1/3 + 3/6=5/6. A few of us are starting a paper airplane unit.
We will throw paper airplanes and track various stats like total distance and air time.

In Social Studies, we are watching a show about the American Revolution, so far we have watched two episodes an my favorite is the first one .My favorite things from the first episode were when John Rolfe planted tons of tobacco and it grew like crazy,I also liked when The Americans surprise attacked the British. Lastly,I liked the part when Paul Revere warned the Americans that the British were coming.

What We Have Been Doing This Week in 5th grade

Every Friday in math we do this thing called proof, what we do in proof is that each of us solves the same problem and then we check if it is right with the class.Then the class gives you a score out of 20 based on if you got the question right and other things such as, neatness, circle the question,cross out all useless info,etc.

We are now publishing our narratives onto the blog.

We are now publishing our literary essays onto the blog.

We are also preparing for our conferences.

What we have been doing this week in 5th grade.

In math we are working on adding and subtracting fractions,Here is an Example 1/6 + 2/3=5/6. A group of us will be starting on graphing data(Mean, Median, Mode).
 In Reading we are doing self revising,teacher revising,peer revising using the rubric for our literary essays.We are also continuing the book challenge.In writing
We have been starting to type out our narratives.We will also be doing peer revising,teacher revising,self revising for our narratives.

In math we have been comparing fractions here is an example,2/5=4/10.and we will also be learning a new fractions unit next week.and a few of us are learning about renaming fractions here is an example,4/5-2/3=2/15.

we are continuing to write our conclusions for our literary essays.we are learning how to ,make powerful endings,and next week we will be  finishing revising this week.

we are continuing  to work on our science expo class project and you guys can come see it at the SHA gym next Wednesday from 5 to 7 pm.

we are starting book clubs and we are reading the books now, and then in 2 to 3 weeks we will meet with our groups.

What we have been doing this week in 5th grade

This week in math we have been working on order of operations.(6x6) +12=48.We have also been learning about comparing fractions and here is an example,12.6>11.9.A small group of us has been working on subtracting fractions with renaming here is an example,1 1/5 -8/10=2/5.

This week in reading we are starting our rough drafts for our literary response.We have also been working on what makes a great introduction and here is what we learned,ask a question,a famous quote,a universal statement,very large idea.

In science we are preparing for the science expo.We are collecting water samples  from various lakes rivers oceans and ponds.

In writing we are continuing our narratives.we are also looking at our traits writing hand book to go over sentence fluency.

What we have been doing this week in 5th grade

This week in math we learned about the simplest form of a fraction For Example, 50/100 = 1/2.we also learned about converting a decimal into a fraction , .3 can be converted into 3/10. We also learned about multiples , a multiple is basically a  number that other numbers can multiply into.A small group of us are working on adding unlike fractions An Example of this is,2/3 + 5/6 = 1 1/2. In Reading we are making our literary response to Because of Winn Dixie. In writing we are making a rough draft for our narratives. We are also reading narratives and looking for strong verbs.

What we did this week in 5th grade

Here is what we did this week in room 404.In math we learned about factors,a factor is 6. 6 is a factor because it can go into a bigger number 24 .24 has all of these factors 1,24,2,8,3,6,4,12.We also learned about prime and composite numbers. Prime means that it only has 2 factors,itself and 1. Composite means that your number has many factors For Example,30 has 15,5,6,1,2,10. We also learned about equivalent fractions,an equivalent fraction is this, 1/3 and 2/6 are equivalent because they are equal.

In reading we have been reading because of Winn Dixie,and we have been working on character maps.

In writing we read narratives and wrote what we thought that the author did well.

What We Are Doing In Class

In math we are learning about function tables they are like in and out tables but with algebraic expressions.
One side is in the other side is out and in the middle says the function rule and you need to do the problem in the middle to get the number in the right most column

it is very confusing but when you see it in real life you start to get it.

In reading I have read 25 books so far. We are doing this thing called book challenge we have to read 30 books during the school year. There is one kid who has rad like 50 books!!! We are also doing this thing where we write down the main characters  physical qualities and main personalities of the main characters. Then you write the minor characters and what there role is in the book.

In writing we are still doing our pollution essay I am doing mine on endangered animals. We are doing peer revisions it is when we pass our essays around a circle.and people say what they like and what they wish was better

What We Are Doing in Class

In math we are learning about algebraic expressions. For example, we do things like if a equals 5 and b equals 9 what  is the answer to 5a which would be 25 because when you put a number next to a variable it is multiplication. We are also learning about adding algebraic expressions. It is the same thing but you put a plus sign instead of putting it next to each other.

We learned about plot diagrams. A plot diagram is a diagram basically describes a book. It has the characters settings and the climax which is what the main idea is or like the action point. It  has the falling action which is like what happens after the climax like when the action dies down. It has the rising action which is the stuff that leads up to the climax. Last but not least the resolution it is what happened at the end of the book  it is like the closing.

In writing we are writing a expository essay on pollution we are writing our lead and thesis. last week we made drafts of our topic sentences and details. My essay is about endangered animals it is really coming along.  Alot of us are doing it on pollution in Puget Sound.
