In science we have made ecocolumns and we have all different kinds of creatures. For example, we have snails, fish, crickets and things like that. Almost every day my partner and I watered our seeds. we started out with 2 snails and they are both still alive. We have never had a fish that is alive. When we got our fish we fond out it was dead. When we got our cricket it was jumping around .And the next time we came to see our cricket it was not there.
Some of the creatures rely on each other. For example, the worms rely on the dirt because that is where they live. Not only do the creatures rely on each other but also the things that are not living can rely on each other. for example, the plants can rely on the water so that it can grow ( people have to do the watering ) .
What goes on in your ecocolumns?!?!?
What do you think is going to happen in your ecocolumns ???
What is dead or alive in your ecocolumns ???

Ecocolumns
We made ecocolums with an aquarium and a terrarium. The aquarium is filled with water, fish, snails, elodea, duckweed, and gravel. In the terrarium there are crickets, grass, and dirt. In Daniel's and mine aquarium our snails died but luckily when Mrs. A gave us more elodea and there was a snail on it. Most of our elodea died but we got more. The duckweed died but we got more. The fish are breathing in oxygen and they breath out CO2. The crickets are breathing in oxygen and breathe out CO2.
In Daniel's and my aquarium our animals and plants have a relationship. The fish in the aquarium breathe in the water. This is an example of both an abiotic and biotic relationship. The snails feed off the gravel, this is a biotic relationship. In Daniel's and my terrarium the grass relies on the dirt for roots. The crickets rely on the grass. This is what happens in our ecocolum.

Have you ever had a ecocolumn?
Ecocolumn
My aquarium has had many deaths, such as, Snails and Fish. My Ecocolumn my Fish used to, eat all the water fleas, and the Elodea. My Tarariomhas has a spider (witch just escaped!) and a grasshopper (witch I think died!). There is almost no more Elodea because the fish ate all of it, No more water fleas becayse the fish ate them. If we don't have any more of those things if we don't feed them they could die (either way they are already dead)
My fish rely's on Elodea, water and water fleas. My grass rely's on dirt and water so it's roots will grow. my grasshopper rely's on leaf litter so it can eat it and make it feel like it's at home. my grasshopper rely's on grass so it can eat it. my fish rely's on my snails so it will feel like it's in it's regular habitat. My snail rely's on water so it can stay alive.

Beloria and Emma's ecocolumns
Components of the aquarium are water, rocks, snails and fish. We now have baby snails and are baby beta
fish died. I think having more snails is better for the aquarium. Components of
the terrarium are soil, worms, slugs and grass. The grass grew. This didn't
affect the terrarium.
Abiotic components rely on biotic components for food and
shelter. Biotic components can't live without other. For example grass can't
grow without water, soil and sun.
When things die or start growing how does your terrarium or aquarium change?

Ecocolumns
The fifth graders have been making ecocolumns in groups of two. An ecoclumn is something that has an aquarium on the bottom and a terrarium on top. In a aquarium every group got two snails. In my ecocolumn group, after a while one snail died so than we only had one snail. When one of my partners and my snail died then some of the elodea which is a plant inside the aquarium started d to die two. When both snails died then most of the elodea was mostly dead. Since the elodea needs CO2 and they get it from the snails and since the snails need CO which from the plants, then when one thing dies the other will also die. Latter on we got fish and that could help since they also produce CO for the plants just like the snails.
A terrarium is the land part of the ecocolumn which is on top. My partner and I are growing grass and everyone has at least has one animal which is a cricket. My partner and I have a cricket, two slugs, one potato bug, one ladybug, worms and something else which looks like eggs. The soil and grass giver them shelter and the help the terrarium grow.
Biotic things and abiotic things rely on each other. For example, in the aquarium the gravel is where some sea creatures can sleep. The water is a home to the sea creatures. In the water plants can grow and water is suppose to help plants grow. If there is no water then there will be no sea creatures, all the plants will die. Biotic and abiotic things rely on each other.

My Ecocolumn at School
At science we attached a aquarium and terrarium. Some of the water in the terrarium is going into the aquarium. In our aquarium our snails had babies and we have a fish. In are terrarium we have a slug, snail, cricket, roly poly and a worm. Are fish died with a bone sticking out of it. It's awesome!!
The animals eat the algae off the rock. Our animals need the dirt, leaf litter and rocks. Our animals need the elodea and duckweed to breath. it also rely on the holes at the top
Have you ever had an aquarium and terrarium? If so what animals did you have?

Two-Liter Bottles and Ecocolumns
For the past month students have been learning about ecosystems. Starting next week they will be creating their own micro-ecosystems called ecocolumns!
Here is a finished ecocolumn from another school:

Students will be adding each living and non-living component to their ecosystem and observing what happens. Next, they will design a pollution experiment and carry it out. They will then observe their polluted ecocolumn and compare it to a control ecocolumn that has not been polluted. From there, we will compare what happened in our ecocolumns to what's happening in Puget Sound and continue to research ways to help revive an ecosystem in danger!
Please don't forget to send at least one (preferably 2 or more) CLEAR 2 liter bottle to school with your child! We need them by Monday, September 30.
Contact Mrs. Ambrosio (eambrosio@sha613.org) with any questions!
