The 10th of Tevet & Israel

Students at SHA are using a brand new curriculum from the Lookstein Center of Jewish Education all about Eretz Yisrael throughout the year. It is connected to various fast days and holidays on the Jewish calendar, including the 10th of Tevet. In 5th grade we learned about the significance of the 10th of Tevet and got started on learning about Israel using our new curriculum. Our fist unit focuses on the area of Yehuda and Shomron or Judea and Samaria. Students learned about the geography, history, connections to the Torah, and specifically the city of Bet Lechem. We learned that before the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948, visitors to Kever Rachel wrote messages in diaries that were kept there. Students created fictional characters and wrote journal entries that could have been found in these diaries. Some students are posting their journal entries as blog posts. Coming up...Bet El, Shilo, and Shechem.
