If you’ve gone to Puget Sound you
know what I’m talking about when I say that it is not the cleanest place. It’s
getting more and more polluted everyday. Pollution is affecting food chains and
sea life plus its habitat. A lot has changed in Puget Sound’s last 100 years.
Fish in Puget Sound are dying.
Small fish are important because
they are food for a lot of species. It says on the Seattle Aquarium website
that a tufted puffin can hold up to 5 to 20 small fish in their bills. Hermit
crabs eat almost everything they see including SMALL FISH. Since Puget
Sound is becoming more and more polluted everyday that’s killing small fish and
hurting species that eat them. And without food there aren’t a lot of ways to
live.
It depends on what kind of fish it
is to know what it’s eating. It depends on how big the fish is. Scientists
think the most common food for fish is sea plants or seaweed. You should never
dump garbage like plastic bags into the water because it could kill them. One
gray whale was found with 20 plastic bags in its stomach.
Some scientists think that Puget
Sound sea level rose 6 inches in the last 100 years. When sea level rises
habitats could move wildlife into a new home. Some fish could react right away
and find a new home quickly but most will not. A lot of important wildlife has
been lost in the last 100 years.
Do you like what’s happening to
Puget Sound? If not try and be a little more careful about if you’re littering
or where you are dropping stuff. Just be a little more careful to help out our
environment to keep fish from dying.
